V8 Supercars fans secure pole position
FENCING for next month’s V8 Supercars Championship will start going up on Monday — but for the most diehard fans, preparations for next month’s event have been years in the making.
Gold Coast Tourism acting CEO Miles Roper said accommodation bookings were already up on last year’s ahead of the race weekend on October 23-25.
“Cold Chisel have proven to be a major drawcard for the GC600, with event organisers reporting a spike in ticket sales after the announcement was made that the iconic band would take to the stage on Saturday night,” he said.

However, some fans have gone a step further than buying tickets — choosing instead to buy their own property on the track, securing prime positions for as long as they want them.
Motor racing fan Jeff Arentz rented the same Main Beach unit every year at race time for seven years — making the cross country pilgrimage from his Western Australian home since the track hosted Indy cars.
When the unit came up for sale, he and partner Mandy wasted no time snapping it up.
“We’d enjoyed it so much we decided to buy it,” he said.
“It’s our week holiday we take every year..
“I’m a big V8 Supercars fan — the atmosphere and being able to watch from our loungeroom is a big plus.”
Damian Woods shares a Narrow Neck unit with his mate Andrew Hinz, taking turns for race week each year, watching the main straight from the comfort of the balcony.
“We love our motor racing, and from our unit we can see the track, right up the main straight and see the cars in the pits,” he said.
Residents who live inside the event precinct are provided with accreditation for it, with details of traffic disruptions set to be mailed out in the next week.
Work will begin on barrier and debris fencing on southbound lanes of the Gold Coast highway from Monday, continuing to Main Beach Pde the following week.
